Character

Then there's the character of this eclectic island. The people of Salt Spring can be described as vibrant and conscientious, and one of the more colourful descriptions is, 'a community of 10,000 people with 30,000 opinions'. Along with diverse points of view, there is also much passion and enthusiasm. On any given day, you will hear lively discussion on the streets, in town hall meetings, in the local newspaper, The DRIFTWOOD, the ISLAND TIDES, or on the website SALTSPRING NEWS, around issues that are important to islanders.

The people of Salt Spring have a long history of generosity and responding in a heartbeat to concerns that affect their own. Several groups have been established to respond to global and community concerns. There are local chapters of the RAGING GRANNIES and AMENESTY INTERNATIONAL . SALTSPRINGERS FOR SAFE FOOD brings awareness of issues affecting food safety and security. The Copper Kettle's aim is to eliminate poverty and homelessness with dignity. The VOICE OF WOMEN FOR PEACE raises our consciousness about the consequences of war and need for peace and locally-founded SWOVA, Salt Spring Women Opposed to Violence and Abuse, has received national recognition and awards for its proactive work around education, awareness and prevention of violence and abuse. SOLID is dedicated to supporting healthy, self-reliance communities in sub-Saharan Africa which are facing the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Dealing with the local economy, our local chapter of the CHAMBER OF COMMERCE , dedicates itself to the important issues around tourism, trade and commerce on this island. It operates a very popular Visitor Information Center, offers up-to-date maps of the island and directories of accommodations and services. It serves over 300 members.

Volunteers are the glue that holds this community together in many ways. Volunteer activity is strong and significant. A recently established website VOLUNTEER SALT SPRING , helps connect those who have something to offer with those who have a need.
