Economy The economy on Salt Spring Island reflects that of the rest of the province of BC in many ways, and like the rest of Canada, enjoys stability and consumer confidence. The economic profile of Salt Spring Island shows a community with a high proportion of entrepreneurs, many working in a variety of art, craft and service-related enterprises. In fact, this island abounds in talent within the visual and performing arts. All summer long, ARTCRAFT, located in our heritage Mahon Hall, showcases the outstanding talents of local artisans, as do the many excellent galleries and studios speckled throughout the island. The Salt Spring Island Visitor's Centre offers information about the popular self-guided STUDIO TOUR that allows visitors to drop in on artists and craftspeople at work! Excellent writers are drawn to this island as well, as indicated by the number and variety of publications for sale by local authors including Arthur Black, Charles Kahn, Mona Fertig, Pat and Rosemarie Keough, Brian Brett and Kathy Page. A wide variety of books are available at outlets such as Salt Spring Books, Watermark Books and Volume II. Although arts, crafts and music take a great deal of the limelight, much economic activity includes business services, construction, public services, accommodations, retail trade and farming. Of great benefit to teleworkers, the technological infrastructure here allows them to conduct much of their work from home. In addition, enterprises related to health and wellness products, services and workshops seem to thrive on Salt Spring Island. Given the influx of visitors to the island, it is not surprising that many of the goods and services offered here reflect a strong focus on tourism, particularly in the summer months. The SALT SPRING ISLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE reports that roughly 200,000 visitors are welcomed to our island each year. Many residents make a living offering excellent accommodations to our visitors, as seen by the nearly 100 B&Bs and cottages, including some very luxurious ones. Alongside these home-based accommodations, one can find lodging at the SEABREEZE INNE Motel, the HARBOUR HOUSE HOTEL or one of several campsites, including RUCKLE PROVINCIAL PARK. An interesting aspect of the economy of Salt Spring Island is the availability of a local currency. SALT SPRING $$ are available in currencies up to $100, and feature the talented contributions of local artists. Salt Spring Dollars is a unique alternative currency that is totally backed by the Canadian dollar. It is accepted on par at many local businesses and all banks and credit unions. One half of the sales of the currency are injected into worthy community projects. The INSTITUTE FOR SUSTAINABILITY, EDUCATION AND ACTION was established on the island to bring together those wanting to work and live sustainably, and in its educational, research and communal efforts, it encourages the practice of community, organizational, and individual sustainability.
